Herbal Remedies for Anxiety: Safe and Effective?

Plants parts — seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, and flowers — have been used medicinally by every culture. 

Archaeologists have found evidence that we’ve been using plants medicinally for at least 60,000 years! (1)

Over 100 modern drugs are based on traditional natural herbal remedies. (3)

(Hippocrates used willow leaves to treat pain. Now we isolate the willow’s active ingredient and call it aspirin.)

There’s been a resurgence in the use of herbs for depression and anxiety in recent years. (4)

This interest has been fueled, in part, by the rising costs of prescriptions and the awareness that anti-anxiety drugs have some unacceptable side effects like memory loss, depression, and increased risk of suicide. (5)

While these drugs have worked wonders for some, for many they have not been the answer.

Herbal remedies can be a viable alternative to treat anxiety.

Let’s take a look at three of the most commonly used herbs to see how they work, and if they are right for everyone.

1. Chamomile

Chamomile has a long history of use for insomnia, stress, and anxiety and is considered very safe. (6)

If you’ve ever had a cup of Sleepytime tea before bed, you’ve used chamomile as an herbal remedy.

Chamomile is particularly beneficial for those who suffer from both depression and anxiety. (7)

However, it’s recommended you avoid chamomile if you’re sensitive to the very common allergen ragweed.

Since they belong to the same plant family, there’s a chance of allergic cross-reactivity

2. Kava

People throughout the South Pacific have appreciated kava for its ability to relax while maintaining mental clarity. (8)

It reduces anxiety and shows promise as an alternative to prescription drugs for generalized anxiety disorder.

However, there are some concerns that kava can cause liver damage. (9)

It’s still available in the US, but some countries have taken it off the market. So proceed with caution. 

3. Valerian

Valerian has been called “nature’s valium.” 

It’s been used for insomnia, anxiety, and nervousness for almost 2,000 years and is generally considered safe. (10)

It’s believed valerian works by increasing GABA, a relaxing neurotransmitter.

Since it can make you drowsy, it’s best to use it in the evening, at least to start.

However, some users have a paradoxical reaction and feel more anxious instead of less when using valerian. 

As you can see from these examples, just as with prescription anti-anxiety medication, no one herbal anxiety remedy will be the perfect match for everyone. 

When buying herbs, it’s critical you purchase them from a reputable company that specializes in herbal remedies.

Recently, it was discovered that herbal supplements sold under brand name labels from Walmart, Target, Walgreens, and GNC contained very little of what was listed on the label. (11)

In fact, 80% of the products tested contain NONE of the herb on the label.

Herbs tested included valerian, St. John’s wort, and the popular brain booster, ginkgo.

What they did contain was cheap fillers, including houseplants.

Obviously these herbal supplements would not have been helpful, and were potentially dangerous. 

Vitamins for Anxiety and Stress

While it’s important to have all your basic vitamin needs met for general health and mental well-being, there are a few vitamins you should pay particular attention to if you have anxiety.

Taking megadoses of vitamins for anxiety probably won’t help if you are already getting adequate amounts. 

But being low in certain vitamins can exacerbate anxiety symptoms, and vitamin supplements can help.

4. B Complex Vitamins

B complex vitamins are sometimes referred to as “happy vitamins” or “anti-stress vitamins” since they can help improve your mood and increase your tolerance to stress.

Anxiety, depression, fatigue, and poor concentration are signs of B vitamin deficiency. (12)

B vitamins are needed to provide energy to brain cells and to create neurotransmitters.

B vitamins can address imbalances between GABA, serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrine that contribute to anxiety. (13)

A word of caution: some people get too “energized” by taking B vitamin supplements and find it makes them more anxious. (14)

5. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin.”

Between spending time indoors and wearing sunscreen when we are outside, vitamin D deficiency affects 75% of us. (15)

Vitamin D can help with anxiety associated with fibromyalgia. (16)

Low vitamin D may, in part, be responsible for the anxiety and depression people experience from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). (17)

If your anxiety gets worse during the winter, vitamin D may be the answer.

Since it’s hard to get all you need from food and the sun, consider vitamin D supplementation.

Not all supplements that can help anxiety fall neatly into either the herb or vitamin categories.

There are substances like amino acids, minerals, and other nutrients with anti-anxiety properties as well.

Supplements like 5-HTP and phosphatidylserine are thought to work by balancing neurotransmitter levels.  

Lactium, made from whey protein, works by reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol. (18)

Magnesium and taurine are useful for relaxing the nervous system. (1920)

Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil supplements provide essential basic building blocks of brain cells. It can ease anxiety while also enhancing many other brain functions. (21)

Homeopathic Remedies for Anxiety: Do They Work?

Homeopathy is a 200-year-old healing practice that has millions of followers worldwide, but also many detractors.

Compared to prescriptions drugs and even herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies are relatively inexpensive.

Since they contain extremely dilute concentrations of active ingredients, they are considered very safe. 

But the medical community claims they are worthless and work only because of the placebo effect

Not that we think there’s anything wrong with the placebo effect — your mind is one of the most powerful healing tools there is! 

A meta analysis of 118 homeopathic trials concluded homeopathic remedies are more effective than a placebo, but noted that more studies are needed. (22)

One study found that 58% of those using homeopathic remedies for anxiety cited improvement. (23)

Another study found that 60% of participants with major depression, social phobias, or panic disorders benefited from homeopathic treatment. 

Homeopathic remedies have even been used to help anxious mice who theoretically should be immune to the placebo effect. (24

Compare that to the study that found only 25% of patients responded positively to their anti-anxiety medications. (25)

Most natural foods stores have a homeopathic display with information available to help you choose the remedy that most closely matches your set of anxiety related symptoms.

If you have a hard time deciding, look for a homeopathic formula that contains multiple ingredients.

This increases the likelihood that it will work for you.

Relaxation Techniques for Anxiety

In dealing with anxiety, one of the most helpful things you can do is to change your relationship with stress.

Too much stress actually changes the form and function of your brain. 

It causes your brain’s “fear center” — the amygdala — to grow and become more active.

This creates a vicious cycle of even more fear, stress, and anxiety. (26

There are many proven ways to manage stress.

Some relaxation techniques work on a more physical level and some are more mental.

  • acupressure
  • biofeedback 
  • brainwave entrainment
  • breathing exercises
  • Emotional Freedom Technique
  • hypnosis
  • light therapy
  • listening to music

  • progressive relaxation
  • visualization

There are also relaxation techniques that engage the services of a practitioner such as acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, reflexology, or Reiki.

None of these techniques are “one and done.”

You have to do them regularly to experience any significant improvement in your anxiety.

For best results, make your relaxation practice a regular part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth.

If any of these relaxation techniques make your anxiety symptoms worse, try something else for now.

Forcing yourself to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable might feed rather than abate your anxiety.

Don’t get discouraged and don’t beat yourself up over it.

No one relaxation technique works for everyone.

You can always try it again later when your anxiety has eased up some.

Physical Exercise for Anxiety

It’s not easy to relax when you’re consumed with stress and anxiety.

If you’re too anxious to even think about sitting down to relax, you should consider physical exercise instead.

Exercise is a proven anxiety buster that can also help depression, ADHD, OCD, and addictions. (27)

Walking is a great place to start.
