There are hundreds of diets out there claiming to be the best and most effective. However, many of them are lacking in vital nutrients, they consist of a bunch of processed food, and they are impossible to maintain long-term.

Additionally, if you’re someone who struggles with IBS, your primary objective is not likely to lose weight, but to just feel better.

So, what is the best diet when everything you eat makes you feel miserable?

That was my question for many years, and it took me a while to find the answer. After years of trial and error and much research, I have found certain Paleo-style diets to be very effective at healing digestive problems and reducing painful symptoms.

Below, I will discuss 3 diets that I recommend trying if you’re suffering from digestive distress. The basis for all of these protocols is that you are removing inflammatory, difficult to digest foods, and incorporating nutrient-dense, easily digestible foods. You are also eating real food; no processed junk or refined sugar.

1. Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

The SCD protocol has been around for many years and is a very healthy, well-balanced diet that is highly specific to the types of sugars and starches allowed. The types of carbohydrates allowed on SCD are predominantly single sugars – those found in fruit, honey, properly prepared yogurt, and certain vegetables.

This diet eliminates any difficult to digest sugars and starches. The idea is that any food, and specifically carbohydrates, given to a person with digestive problems, should be a food that requires little or no digestion, so the digestive process doesn’t get in the way of nutrient absorption.

SCD has proved extremely effective for those suffering from Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, chronic diarrhea, IBS, and diverticulitis. While many people don’t have to stay on the diet forever, it is critical that you adhere strictly to the protocol while you’re healing. 2. Autoimmune Protocol (AIP)

AIP is a fantastic plan to help heal your gut and improve your digestion. It’s given its name because AIP is a great diet for those dealing with autoimmune disease. All disease begins in the gut, and autoimmune conditions are strongly linked to poor gut health and leaky gut.

AIP works to reduce inflammation in the gut and calm inflammation in the body. Many people with chronic digestive problems also have other systemic symptoms, such as depression, headaches, skin issues, and joint pain.

This diet works to remove any offending foods, and ease the digestive process so the gut can heal. It takes Paleo a step further by also eliminating nightshades, nuts/seeds, eggs, chocolate, alcohol, and a few other items.

3. Low FODMAP Paleo

Many conventional GI doctors recommend the Low FODMAP diet if you have IBS. I believe this is a great start however, I like to take it a step further and suggest a Low FODMAP version of the Paleo Diet. Foods high in FODMAPs are typically problematic for those with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).

FODMAPs are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. Healthy, paleo foods like brussels sprouts, cauliflower, garlic, onions, and apples are high in FODMAPs. These foods can ferment in the gut and worsen IBS symptoms. If you find that your symptoms worsen when you eat foods high in FODMAPs, then I recommend taking a lactulose breath test to diagnose SIBO.

I prefer a paleo version of low FODMAPs because the basic low FODMAP diet still allows a lot of processed foods, sugar, and gluten-free grains. Eliminating these items further promotes healing, reduces inflammation, and reduces uncomfortable GI symptoms. To view a list of low FODMAP foods, click here.

Some other great features of a Paleo diet in general are that it’s a fairly easy diet to maintain long-term because it’s very satiating. When consuming protein and healthy fat, your body feels fuller longer and you’re not tempted to keep eating. It’s also an extremely nourishing diet, which makes it a great long-term protocol.

Following a Paleo protocol is very effective at healthy weight management. Eating this way is great for healing the gut and balancing hormones. As this happens, your body will start to return to a healthy weight whether that means shedding pounds or gaining weight.
