I attended a Detox Summit last week, and one of the lectures presented by Jeffrey Smith discussed GMO’s as food toxins. Jeffrey Smith is an author, filmmaker and executive director. He is the leading consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices. His extensive and meticulous research summarizes why the safety assessments conducted by the FDA are based on outdated science and false assumptions and why genetically engineered foods must become our nation’s top food safety priority.
The Basics- What are GMO’s?
GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) are plant whose DNA has been altered. Certain genes from bacteria and viruses are taken and forced into the plants which creates unnatural proteins. The main reason for genetic engineering is so crops will be resistant to weed killer. You’ve probably heard of Roundup. This weed killer is produced by Monsanto who is the primary corporation behind GMO crops.
All conventional soy, corn, cotton, sugar beets, and alfalfa seeds are genetically modified as Roundup ready seeds.
This means that these crops are being sprayed with Roundup and surviving, which means that we are consuming them. The Roundup gets absorbed into these crops which makes them toxic. When we consume these products, we are consuming highly toxic food. Scientists have actually claimed that Roundup is the most chronically toxic chemical on the planet due to its widespread use.
How is Roundup Toxic?
To get a little scientific, Roundup interferes with the cytochrome P450 pathway in our body. These specific enzymes are critical to detoxing the liver. Ultimately, Roundup impairs the liver’s ability to detoxify. Roundup is also a potent antibiotic that kills the good bacteria in the gut and causes an overgrowth of harmful bacteria. This can lead to digestive issues, leaky gut, and a myriad of chronic illnesses. Roundup is also an endocrine disruptor and it’s been linked to cancer growth. This toxic product prevents nutrient absorption and has been linked to kidney failure.Chronic digestive issues and digestive diseases have increased in parallel to the introduction of genetically modified products in the US. There is absolutely no doubt that this toxin is wreaking havoc on our bodies, yet the FDA allows it in our food supply.
There was actually a 90-day rat study done that was extended for two years. In this study rats ate Roundup ready corn. They ended up developing toxic liver and kidneys. They had an increased rate of morbidity and mortality. They experienced endocrine disruption and sterility. These rats developed massive tumors. There were also birth defects and stunted growth in the offspring.
The two main toxins in GMO’s are Roundup and BT Toxin which predisposes humans to the previously mentioned conditions.
BT toxin pokes holes in insects’ stomachs in order to kill them. In humans, it pokes holes in our cells. Both BT toxin and Roundup damage the intestinal microvilli which leads to leaky gut and autoimmunity. BT toxin is also a potent allergen.
In fact, “The only human feeding study ever conducted on commercialized GM crops proved that the genes inserted into soybeans- making the soybeans round up ready- transferred into the DNA of bacteria living inside our intestines and may continue to function once they have been inserted.” This means that even after you stop consuming GMO’s, your own gut bacteria may be making GM proteins 24/7.
GMO’s and Gluten
Research has suggested that symptoms of gluten-related disorders might be induced by GMO consumption. GMO’s may precipitate gluten sensitivity causing autoimmune reactivity. A number of individuals have found that when they remove GMO’s from their diet, their symptoms are alleviated.
Monsanto and the FDA
Over the years, Monsanto has done nothing but lie and distort the truth, and the USDA turns a blind eye. Monsanto spends enormous amounts of money promoting lies and hiding evidence. It doesn’t help either when employees from Monsanto go to work for the FDA. Before Michael Taylor was the person in charge of policy at the FDA, he was Monsanto’s attorney. He later became Monsanto’s VP and chief lobbyist. He is now back at the FDA as the US Food Safety Czar.
When he was in charge of policy, he falsely claimed that the agency wasn’t aware of any facts that GMO’s were significantly different than non-GMO’s. On the basis of that lie, no safety studies or labeling was made necessary from the FDA side. Years later, documents were made public from a law suit that showed that the overwhelming consensus of the scientists working at the FDA was exactly the opposite. The scientists had concluded that GMO’s were significantly different and dangerous. They could lead to toxicity, allergens, etc. and they should be subject to rigorous, long-term safety studies, including human studies.
While you may be thinking, well I’ll just buy non-gmo products, and I’ll be good. Well, it’s not that easy. Roundup is also sprayed on crops before harvest as a ripening agent. So even non-GMO crops like grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables are contaminated with Roundup. The only way to avoid this is to by organic. Additionally, most restaurants cook with corn, soy, and canola oils. Preparing your own food and buying organic when you can is the best place to start.
The commercialized GM crops that you definitely want to purchase organic include:
- sugar beets
- Hawaiian papaya
- yellow squash
Other sources of GMO’s include:
- dairy products from cows injected with GM hormone rbGH
- food additives, enzymes, flavorings, processing agents
- meat, eggs, dairy products from animals that have eaten GM feed
- honey and bee pollen that may have GM sources of pollen
