For over 35 years, Honest Weight Food Co-op has served New York’s Capital Region as a cooperatively owned and operated natural foods grocery store, open to the public. We are owned by our members and our mission is to provide high quality, affordable natural foods and healthy living products to our member-owners and the greater community.
Honest Weight began as a small buying club of about 20 people which opened in January, 1976. Member-owners took turns collecting, collating, and processing monthly orders. This buying club was the first in Albany and its arrival finally made healthy, nutritious foods accessible to the Capital District.
Within the first year, orders grew so quickly that Honest Weight’s member-owners decided to purchase its first storefront on Quail Street. It was then that the Co-op moved from the buying club model and opened the store to the public.
By 1995, the Quail Street location was bursting at its seams and, with member-owner approval, Honest Weight's store moved to Central Avenue. This store served us well, but with a growing roster of member-owners and an increasing number of non-member customers shopping our ever expanding selection of wholesome natural foods, great cheeses, and specialty foods, as well as health and beauty products, we once again outgrew our building.
Now, Honest Weight has built a brand new store at 100 Watervliet Avenue in the city of Albany. In keeping with our mission, this building is constructed with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. The store, which opened on June 19th, 2013, also features improved parking and a larger facility with expanded services and amenities.
