General Mills just made a very big announcement.
In a huge move that signifies your voice is being heard, General Mills is following in Campbell Soup's footsteps in labeling GMOs in products.
The company is making this change all over the country, as labeling products for just one state would raise costs for consumers, according to the release.
The Minneapolis-based maker of Cheerios cereal, Progresso soups and Yoplait yogurt notes it is not practical to label its products for just one state, so the disclosures required by Vermont starting in July will be on its products throughout the U.S.
General Mills Inc. also repeated the call for a "national solution" to the labeling of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, as legislation on the matter has stalled in Congress. The food industry has called for voluntary labeling of GMOs, and sought to prohibit states from enacting a patchwork of laws around the country. [via abcnews]
"We can't label our products for only one state without significantly driving up costs for our consumers, and we simply won't do that," Jeff Harmening, head of General Mills' U.S. retail operations said in a post on a company blog Friday. "The result: Consumers all over the country will soon begin seeing words legislated by the state of Vermont on the labels of many of their favorite General Mills food products."
Dark Act Defeated
Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate failed to advance a bill that would have outlawed states from passing laws that require food packages to disclose the presence of GMOs. The defeat was a blow to the food industry, which has opposed national and state laws requiring GMO labeling. Campbell Soup Co. recently broke ranks and announced plans to voluntarily post GMO labels on its products.
Labeling for genetically modified ingredients has been a contentious topic the past few years. Consumer groups have pushed for labeling, saying consumers have a right to know what's in their food. The food industry claims that such labels are unnecessary because GMOs were long ago approved by federal food safety regulators.
Most corn, soybeans and beet sugar produced in the United States is grown from GMO seeds. Thus, supermarkets are filled with products containing GMO ingredients.
General Mills also said Friday it has added a search tool on its website, ask.generalmills.com, to provide GMO ingredient information for hundreds of U.S. products. [via Star Tribune]
Market Share and Consumers Trust
U.S. consumers want more transparency about how their food is made. Harmening in his post acknowledged those desires but claimed that every health and safety agency in the world says GMOs are perfectly safe.
The businesses that have adjusted to those consumers have seen a big payoff: Whole Foods Market for one, has promised to implement GMO labeling by 2018, while last year, Chipotle Mexican Grill announced with great fanfare that it would no longer serve food made with GMOs.
Vani Hari (aka the Food Babe), a long-time food activist and investigative journalist, thinks that "big food" is being forced to react. They know that if they don't they'll be in danger of losing market share:
General Mills latest move is a signal that they will do whatever it takes to hold on to the market share they are losing as a result of the major food movement happening in this country. They've lost consumers trust and continuing to be on the wrong side of the GMO transparency debate is not good for business.
The Tipping Point?

GMOs and RoundUp
You can’t really discuss genetic engineering without also addressing the chemicals these plants are engineered to tolerate. About 85 percent of all genetically engineered plants are herbicide-tolerant—designed to tolerate very high levels of herbicides, glyphosate in particular. These are the so-called Roundup Ready crops.
It’s important to realize that glyphosate is not “just” an herbicide. As explained by Dr. Huber, it was first patented as a mineral chelator. It immobilizes nutrients, so they’re not physiologically available for your body.
“You may have the mineral [in the plant], but if it’s chelated with glyphosate, it’s not going to be available physiologically for you to use, so you’re just eating a piece of gravel,” Dr. Huber says.
